Dr. Somerville is a retired optometrist who donated over 1000 artifacts to the Maritime Heritage Centre that were originally part of the Campbell River Optical Maritime Museum. Amazingly, this collection was originally displayed in Dr. Somerville’s office area and was available, free of charge, for patients to view while waiting for an eye appointment.
Born on May 14th 1940 in Trail, BC, Dr. Somerville has lead a life filled with many fantastic accomplishments. Notable, at age 12, he became one of the first SCUBA divers in British Columbia and would eventually progress to commercial diving. He also became interested in Search and Rescue (SAR) after assisting SAR teams in the recovery of bodies. This would lead to him being not only an advocate, but a founding member of the Canadian Marine Rescue Auxiliary.
